The Ena Bre Flock

The farm

A smallholding on the edge of the high moor

The Ena Bre Flock is a native and rare breed smallholding at Merrivale, on beautiful Dartmoor.

Native & rare breeds

Dartmoor has been home to hardy, traditional sheep for centuries, and the animals here are chosen to suit it. Horned rams, curly-fleeced ewes, goats on the granite and chickens in the yard all share the same few acres.

The flock includes Longwools, Closewools and Hebrideans. The Hebrideans have settled well to their new life on Dartmoor.

It is a small, personal farm. Every animal has a name, a habit and a place in the flock, and visitors who spend a little time here soon learn who is who.

Life on Dartmoor

The moor shapes everything. Some weeks it is storms and soggy sheep; others it is a pink and orange sky to end a lovely day, with the whole flock lined up in the evening light.

Through autumn the green grass returns, the girls keep laying their eggs even on the gloomiest days, and the flock keeps a hopeful eye on the feed bucket.
